One of the fundamental design choices that I made in the development of MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows and iNetWorth was to exclude any capability for importing transactions from users’ bank accounts automatically. As stated on my Home Page, if you have your banking app set up to import transactions from your bank automatically, it can be difficult to spot any transactions that you didn’t make or didn’t intend to authorise. If you enter your purchases into your banking app manually and reconcile your transactions regularly, you can spot suspicious withdrawals and subscriptions that you no longer need promptly and so protect yourself against losses. The impact of this design choice on my development of MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows and iNetWorth has been for me to make the manual entry of transactions as easy and as rapid as possible by striving to avoid the need to always add transactions from scratch and thereby reducing the occasions when you must complete each and every field in the Edit Transaction dialogue box.
MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows and iNetWorth all support the duplication of existing transactions and the automated processing of scheduled transactions. Once you have been using MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows or iNetWorth for a few months you are likely to have a good source of existing transactions that can be duplicated and edited, rather than entered from scratch. For example, most weeks my family do a weekly shop at our local supermarket, resulting in a split transaction (we track booze separately from food and other household goods). Rather than entering each week’s supermarket shopping transaction from scratch, we duplicate an existing transaction and edit its contents. To find the transaction to duplicate quickly we use the Payees View, select our supermarket in the Payees Source View and pick out a suitable similar transaction. If we have bought petrol or diesel, we select the petrol or diesel account in our Car expenses group and duplicate a previous purchase, changing the date and payee as required (adding a new payee directly, if necessary, in the Edit Transaction dialogue box) and editing the amount spent. Previous users of Home Accountz may appreciate that the Duplicate Transaction function built into MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows and iNetWorth is intended to mimic the Template Transactions capability in Home Accountz.
We have set up monthly insurance premiums, council tax payments, salary/pension receipts and charitable donations, for example, as scheduled transactions. These are entered automatically on launching MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows and iNetWorth. When payments and/or receipts are scheduled on weekends or bank holidays, we need to enter them manually early or edit their date in the Accounts View, once they have been entered automatically; however, this is not necessary most of the time and there is a fix on its way (please see the next paragraph). There are other aspects of the scheduled transaction capability that can be exploited to reduce the need for entering transactions from scratch. Annual insurance policies (and council tax payments in the UK) that are paid off monthly often have one amount charged for the first month and a different amount charged for the remaining 11 months of the year. The capability to add a single scheduled transaction and then duplicate that transaction supports this situation directly; you can enter the first payment as a Once Only scheduled transaction and duplicate it to add the remaining payments as a monthly scheduled transaction with 11 repeats. Alternatively you can enter just the first payment as a scheduled transaction and, once it has been processed, select the processed payment transaction in the Accounts or Payees View and then duplicate it as a scheduled transaction (press the Alt key in macOS, press the Shift + S keys in Windows to change the Duplicate Button to a Schedule Button or select Schedule in the context menu in iOS), selecting a Monthly period with 11 repeats in the Edit Scheduled Transaction dialogue box that appears.
If you do have a bunch of scheduled transactions that occur on one day and that day falls over a weekend or on a bank holiday, correcting the date of each and every transaction, once processed, can be painful. There is good news, however, as hinted at above. The next updates (already coded and currently in testing) to MyNetWorth and MyNetWorth for Windows will support the selection of multiple transactions in the Accounts View and then changing the date and/or toggling their cleared status for all of them in one go. Also, please do not be tempted to enter scheduled transactions early to check what your future net worth or account balance will be; the need to do this is already met in the Scheduled View, which shows future net worth (All Accounts selected) or future account balance (for the account selected in the Account Filter). Furthermore, if you have a one off payment coming up, you can enter it as a Once Only scheduled transaction and see its impact on future net worth or account balance in the Schedule View rather than adding it in the Accounts View early.
So, please do not feel that the entry of transactions into MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows and iNetWorth and monitoring future net worth / account balance need be onerous. The tips and tricks listed above should help you to avoid the need to always add transactions from scratch and to keep an eye on your future finances quickly and easily.
PS If you are a user of MyNetWorth, MyNetWorth for Windows or iNetWorth and have suggestions for how to improve any of these apps, please do let me know. I am always happy to receive suggestions for improvement, which you can submit by email to me at chris@crizzle.co.uk or via the Contact page.
