Upgrading to the Full Version of iNetWorth

When you decide to buy the Full version of MyNetWorth or iNetWorth after trying out the Preview version, you will most likely have saved a number of accounts, account groups, payees and transactions to file; these will be data you will not want to have to re-enter. Fortunately (and intentionally), the file format used by both versions (.mnydata) is identical, so you can open a file saved with the Preview version in the Full version. However, you do need to take care when upgrading to the Full version of iNetWorth. It is essential that you install iNetWorth and move your data file(s) out of your iNetWorthPreview folder before you remove/delete the iNetWorthPreview app from your _iOS_device. This is due to the way iOS sandboxing works.

When you create a document in iOS and save it on your iPhone or iPad, iOS creates a sandboxed folder and writes the new file to it. When you delete an iOS app, iOS removes the sandboxed folder associated with the app and all of its contents. So users should not remove/delete the Preview version of iNetWorth from their iOS device before installing the Full version. Please install the Full version, move the .mnydata file(s) created by the Preview version from the iNetWorthPreview folder to the newly created iNetWorth folder before removing/deleting the iNetWorthPreview app. Once you have confirmed that you can open the file(s) that you generated in the Preview version in the Full version, you can remove/delete the iNetWorthPreview app.

If you saved your file(s) on your iCloud drive in iNetWorthPreview (or moved them to another folder), removing/deleting iNetWorthPreview app from your iOS device will not delete your file(s); only files in the iNetWorthPreview folder on your device will be deleted. Nevertheless, I recommend that you still follow the guidance above.

Uninstalling the MyNetWorth Preview app from a macOS device will not delete any file(s). However, please note that you cannot open your existing file in MyNetWorth by double clicking on it in Finder. MyNetWorth is not a document based app, even though it saves its data in a document file (two files in fact). When you double click on a file in Finder, Finder launches the app that it associates with the file type but neither MyNetWorth nor MyNetWorth Preview loads the file that you have selected in Finder into memory. MyNetWorth (or MyNetWorth Preview) launches and loads a copy of the file that is held in the app’s (sandboxed) container (~/Library/Containers/MacOSMoney or ~/Library/Containers/MacOSMoney_Trial) into memory. This is why you are always prompted to save any unsaved changes when you exit MyNetWorth and, if you choose not to, your original data remains as was. When you do save, two files are updated, these being your nominated datafile and the copy of the datafile that is held in MyNetWorth’s app container.
